5. EPI’s Tribute to Liz
   The news of Liz’s passing has been a great sadness to EPI, our weaving group. Liz has been part of this group since the very start and through the years we have shared our weaving, learning, exhibiting, buy materials and friendships that have been sustained for over 40 years.
   EPI is a weaving term that we took for the name of our group which we formed in 1983 after working together in a study group for 2 years with Master Weaver, Rhonda O’Meara. It means “ends per inch” which refers to the warp on a loom. Now, although we are just a group of 6, only a few ‘ends’, at times we have had up to 12 people involved.
   It was Liz’s delightful enthusiasm as a foundation member of EPI that helped to get us organised and working well. In the 1980s she found wonderful yarn from the Woollen Mills of Geelong which we all benefitted from. Liz shared her deep skill and knowledge of the craft of weaving and immersed herself in the joy of making.
   The group has always met monthly in our homes and Liz hosted us all in Drysdale with the usual pot of hearty soup. She and David also welcomed us for some weekend workshops. One weekend, I (Rosemary) remember clearly because I brought my very young baby, Hugh, and stayed with Liz and David who helped entertain him whilst I was busy. I was so grateful to be able to participate.
   Liz not only skilfully wove beautiful cloth, but also in 1988 she was one of an inaugural group of students who enrolled in the Warrnambool TAFE’s Off Campus Diploma of Art (Tapestry). This course went for 6 years and was an in-depth study and training in Tapestry weaving in which Liz excelled, having a large work acquired by the College.
   The group each put together a few thoughts for this tribute, and words common to all are “generosity”, “exceptional weaver and crafts woman”, “wonderful cook”, “joyful with an infectious laugh” and inspiring “enthusiasm”. Liz will remain in our hearts for ever and will no doubt from time to time be quoted when we grapple with a weaving matter.
   Rest in peace Liz.
