  5. Mervyn - a boy from Bahgallah, whose family the Wombwell's have been part of our community since 1919. His grandfather Archie was one of those who iniated the Building of Bahgallah Memorial Hall in 1922 (and there has been at least one Wombwell on the committee ever since); so it was wonderful that Merv returned to the home of his youth last November for the Centenary - meeting and reminiscing with those he went to school with at the Bahgallah State School (1950-56), and those he played sport with. He was an amazing sportsman. The best all-rounder cricketer in the whole district, we were lucky to have him our Bahgallah team. But his prowess as a footballer was just too great for our rural team - though we always made sure that we claimed him for Bahgallah just the same!
Our Historical Collection housed at the Bahgallah Hall is testament to the Wombwell influence; and there is much photographic and newspaper evidence of Mervyn's very special sporting achievements.
On behalf of the entire community - our condolences to Carol & Family.

  9. You were the outstanding all rounder in all the cricket I played covering a long period of about forty years. I’ll never forget the time you took ten wickets for eleven runs, which included a hat trick and in the same match made 106 runs in one innings. As an opening batsman you bore the brunt of opposition attacks and helped build partnerships with your colleagues who had nowhere the ability you had. And above it all you were a team player who never forgot your early days of learning your craft. I only hope the same can be said about me.
